Assay of fractions of bovine urine for carcinogenic activity after feeding bracken fern (Pteris aquilina).

چکیده
Urine from cattle fed fresh and dried bracken fern for more than 2 years and urine from control cattle was extracted with ethyl acetate and divided into nonacidic and acidic fractions. The residue obtained after removal of the solvent was mixed with 4 times its weight of cholesterol, and the mixture was converted to pellets with the aid of a pellet press. Pellets containing these residues were surgically implanted into the bladders of mice, and one group of mice received pure cholesterol pellets. Five of 15 mice exposed to the acidic fraction and 1 of 13 mice exposed to the nonacidic fraction of the urine of cattle fed bracken fern developed carcinomas. One of 13 mice exposed to the acidic fraction and none of 11 mice exposed to the nonacidic fraction of urine of cattle not fed bracken fern developed carcinomas. When these results were analyzed by the exact method of 2 X 2 tables, the only group of animals with a tumor incidence which was significantly different from the control mice exposed to pure cholesterol (0 carcinomas in 11 animals) were the mice exposed to the acidic fraction of the urine of cattle fed bracken fern (P < 0.05). These preliminary results suggest that 1 or more car cinogenic substances occur in the urine of cattle ingesting bracken fern.

Assay of fractions of bracken fern (Pteris aquilina) for carcinogenic activity.
fractions of bracken fern-fed cattle and of cows bearing spontaneous urinary bladder tumors contained some carcinogenic substance(s) which induced tumors in the bladder of the calf, dog, rat, or mouse and tumors in the skin of mice. It is not known whether this carcinogenic activity is attributable to bracken fern itself or to its metabolites. It has been shown (22) that the carcinogenicity of ...

Bracken fern (Pteris aquilina) mixed with a grain mixture (1:3 by weight) was fed to a group of 40 female 6-week-old Swiss mice intermittently every other week for a total experimental period of 60 weeks. Thirty-three mice survived 30 or more weeks and all developed lymphatic leukemia with multiple organ involvement. Additionally, 5 mice developed multiple pulmonary tumors. No urinary bladder o...

Cattle were fed a diet containing bracken fern in the continuation of a study of the urinary bladder neoplasms produced under these conditions. One of the cattle died of a traumatic pericarditis and had no bladder lesion at 485 days. The other six animals fed bracken fern for from 510 to 1920 days all had gross bladder neoplasms. Four of the six animals with gross bladder neoplasms had transiti...

Bracken fern is currently consumed by farm animals, and this causes a number of well-known syndromes in domestic animals. In large ruminants, chronic enzootic haematuria, the clinical expression of multiple neoplasia of the urinary bladder, occurs. The occurrenc...
متن کاملArsenic hyperaccumulation in the Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata) deters grasshopper (Schistocerca americana) herbivory.
Brake fern, Pteris vittata, not only tolerates arsenic but also hyperaccumulates it in the frond. The hypothesis that arsenic hyperaccumulation in this fern could function as a defense against insect herbivory was tested. Fronds from control and arsenic-treated ferns were presented to nymphs of the grasshopper Schistocerca americana. Feeding damage was recorded by visual observation and quantif...
